The agony column Earl Derr Biggers 9781171764632 Books

An author reflects the culture that they write in, meaning that after generations have come and gone, the story would be hard pressed to continue to hold the attention of the reader and offer something for the time spent reading the book. Once in a blue moon there will be a writer who can accomplish such a goal. Earl Derr Biggers is just such an author. The Agony column starts off innocently enough, progresses where the reader is hooked only to find the tables turned in the end. If that wasn't enough, then there is one more table turning, which was magnificent.

Earls writing style is eloquent, and flavorful. His plot constructs are masterful, and your time spent with this story is a good lession in communicating thru writing. Everyone reading this story will enjoy it.

Another addition to my Earl Derr Biggers book collection.. which I enjoyed.
just before the war in England, a man sees a woman at the next table, that he would love to meet, notices that she
was reading the agony column and uses it to gain access to her via letters.
this is not a Charlie Chan book.
Too much extraneous background information. This became tedious at times. Sometimes the story just didn't move forward quickly enough to hold interest.
I liked this! This is classic mystery writing, with mystery happenng on several levels. It's also short.
This story starts in pre World War I London. Geoffrey West writes about the events of his day to a young woman He wants to date. What was supposed to be information about himself becomes a murder mystery. This is a short story of 104 pages but an enjoyable read.
This is a light, but nicely crafted mystery.

I like Bigger's writings (i.e. Charlie Chan). It seems on par with Agatha Christie.

It does not feature a hard-boiled detective, as per Chandler. However, it has nice twists at the end.

Please note, it is not a long work -- but much more than a short story.
If you've read Charlie Chan, it's fascinating to see his creator, Earl Derr Biggers, exercise his dashing wit and engaging style in this earlier work.

Geoffrey West falls in love at first sight with a girl in a hotel breakfasting with her father. They're all Americans, but the scene is London on the eve of the Great War. Both Geoffrey and his ladylove Marian are reading the Agony Column of the Daily Mail.

That gives Geoffrey the idea of courting her through a message in the Personals. She responds in the Personals by setting him a task write a series of seven letters that will prove he's a man worth knowing.

Amazingly, as he writes the letters, he finds himself embroiled in a murder case with overtones of espionage. To say more about what transpires would spoil the fun.

The lightness of the story contrasts interestingly with the grim mood of England as Germany mobilizes.
